DIY Wedding Earrings

Designing and making your own wedding jewellery can be a fun and easy project. You can also make jewellery for your bridesmaids that will coordinate with their dresses, and can be worn long after your wedding day. You can find a wealth of ideas and inspiration for your design from countless sources, and there is no shortage of places to find supplies.

When designing your jewellery identify some key features of your dress. What stands out about the dress? Think of ways you can compliment the features of the dress and use this as a starting point. You will also want to identify the overall style of your wedding and think of ideas that will compliment your event. Another important factor to consider is how the style and colours of the jewellery you are designing will work with your face, and the way you plan on styling your hair.



Tools Needed
Round nose pliers
Needle nose pliers
Wire cutter

Supplies
12 mm Crystals
6 mm Silver glitter beads
Ear wires
Filigree end caps
65 mm Flat head pins

Instructions
1. Collect your tools and supplies

2. Place an end cap on the flat head pin, followed by a crystal, then another end cap and end with a silver glitter bead

3. Bend the pin at an angle against the glitter bead

4. Using a wire cutter, cut the pin leaving several millimetres and turn the end of the remaining pin with a round nose pliers to form a loop

5. Gripping the loop with a needle nose pliers straighten the earring

6. Use the needle nose pliers to open the loop on the ear wires slightly, place the earring loop into the opening then close the opening

*I used premium silver plated components and sterling silver ear wires for this project. Some individuals have a reaction to fashion jewellery, so using a sterling silver ear wire is an added step that can make a difference.

Ask An Expert: Elizabeth Victoria | Wedding Fascinators

Today, we are happy to have Elizabeth Stevens of Elizabeth Victoria share with us her expertise as a designer and professional image consultant.

Elizabeth took some time to answer a few questions about wedding fascinators and what you need to know when choosing one for your wedding. There are several styles of fascinators and it is important to choose one that matches your style and personality. Elizabeth talks about how to choose a wedding fascinator and suggest thinking about how you will be wearing it on your wedding day. She also addresses the importance of creating a cohesive look and provides tips on finding the style that best suits you.






What are your design options when it comes to selecting a fascinator?

A google image search of “fascinators” will quickly demonstrate that the options are virtually endless when it comes to design. Ultimately, your main choices in selecting a fascinator comes down to design elements like size and scale, materials used, motif or theme, colour, and how you want to wear it.

With Elizabeth Victoria, the options are also pretty much unlimited. I focus primarily on custom work and can make just about anything, so whatever the client's design ideas, they can be realized. That said, to date most Elizabeth Victoria designs could be loosely grouped into three main categories: feather fascinators, flower fascinators and cocktail hats. The latest addition to that list is 20’s flapper-inspired headbands, which I am super excited to launch.


How do you suggest I find the style that is best for me?

Fascinators are lots of fun, but should be chosen with care. I suggest you start with some research and collect images that inspire you. Follow your instincts and go for what you are drawn to and have fun with it.

These visual cues will help you to zero in on things you like, and then you can adjust your options further with three basics:
  • Determine the scale and proportions that best suit your face and body type, and the formality of your event.  So basically do not wear a monolithic beaded headpiece if you are 5’2” with a pixie face and the maid of honour at your sister’s wedding; but if you are a 5’10” diva headed to an exclusive fashion week party, that might be the perfect choice.
  • Choose the dominant design feature. Possibilities are endless, so you should start with a sense of the general feel you are going for the day of your wedding. Feathers can be slick and sophisticated or whimsical and fun. Flowers can be delicate and feminine or bold and seductive. Big puffs of tulle can be ethereal or dramatic, while blingy brooches evoke glamour and elegance. It is all about matching the materials used in the piece to the overall mood or theme of your desired look.
  • Know how you want to wear it. Options for hardware to secure your fascinator depend a lot on the size and desired placement of the piece. You also need to consider how you will wear your hair, and if you want a style that can be worn multiple ways. If you want to wear your fascinator after your wedding; choose a clip for versatility, because it secures quickly and easily, positions however you like, wears comfortably and makes your fascinator work for any hairstyle.
There are many other factors one could assess in pursuit of the perfect fascinator. Vintage inspired weddings are so popular now. Do you have any advice on the best vintage inspired fascinator?

When it comes to choosing a vintage inspired fascinator, the previously stated advice applies. I will also add that it is important to know and match your eras. Each decade in fashion had its mark on how women wore adornments in their hair. Most people that are into vintage know their stuff, but if you are at the early stages of planning or just starting to explore, research fascinators and head pieces from the era you are interested in, so that you get the look right. If you are wearing an actual vintage piece, make sure that the construction and fastening hardware are secure and in good shape.

I am a DIY bride and I will like to make fascinators for my bridesmaids. Do you have any advice?

If you want to make bridesmaids fascinators yourself, my advice is to keep it simple. It can be pretty time-consuming to fabricate multiples, so generate a design that is quick and simple to make. It is easiest if they are all made the same, but if you want them all to be different, work with a common colour palette and use what you know about your friends to personalize each piece using the details.

Fascinators make great surprise gifts, but it is way more fun to make them with your friends at a party than to do it all by yourself. Is there a particular style of wedding dress that works best with a fascinator or can any bride wear one?

Any bride can wear a fascinator and look amazing; the key is balance. Obviously “You In The Dress,” is the main attraction. So, match yourself and the dress. Think of the fascinator as an extension of the dress, it balances out the dress by drawing attention up to your hair and beautiful face. It should get noticed without competing or overshadowing, and it should not appear as an afterthought.


I like the look of a fascinator, and will like to have one custom made. What is the best way for me to approach custom ordering my wedding fascinator?

Working with the information I have presented is a great place to start. It helps to be prepared with some ideas about what you want and need when meeting with a designer. Ask questions! Part of the designer's job is to suggest options and help you decide for yourself what is best for you. You should also to allow enough time to have your order made. I typically suggest three weeks minimum for smaller local orders.

Choosing Your Wedding Location

What you need to know when choosing your wedding location.
You may already have a location in mind or perhaps you are having difficulties narrowing things down. The best way to start is by sitting down together as a couple and making some decisions about where you will like to have your wedding. Draw upon things that you enjoy doing together and perhaps select a location that is in keeping with this. At this point you will want to refer to your wedding budget and the number of guest you are inviting. It will also help if you have an idea of your desired wedding style. Having an understanding and agreement on these factors will assist you as you search for a wedding location.

If you already have an officiate in mind, speak with him or her and confirm what will be needed regarding any specific religious or cultural practices. It is also a good idea to book your ceremony before confirming your reception site. Most religious ceremonies are conducted in a place of worship, however you can also have a spiritual outdoor ceremony. Some officiates will not conduct a wedding outside of a traditional place of worship, while others are willing to do so. If you have your hearts set on a beach wedding, but strongly feel that your religious beliefs should be part of your union; I suggest giving yourself some time to find an officiate that is willing to conduct your ceremony at a non-traditional location.

It is important to identify what type of ceremony and cultural practices you will like to observe at your wedding. A civil ceremony may provide more flexibility; however, if you will like to have your wedding reflect your faith, then a traditional religious ceremony may be your choice. If this is the case then you will need to observe the rules and other practices of your given faith. Some religions require that you meet with your officiate several months prior to your wedding, and that you are a member of their congregation.

Things to Consider

1. How many guests do you want to invite, and what are their needs?
Working through your guest list will help you identify how many people you may have attending your wedding. The number of guests will determine the required capacity of the venue you will require. Identifying the needs of your guests is also important. Considerations may include allergies, dietary preferences, wheel chair access, and travel time to your wedding. Knowing who may be attending your wedding is therefore helpful when it comes to identifying what amenities are required and the accessibility of the space.

2. What are the rules pertaining to taking photographs on the day of your wedding?
This is something that you do not want to take for granted. You will want to confirm with both your ceremony and reception sites, about their rules and policies regarding photography and video.

3. Can you use any of your own vendors or are you required to use a list of "approved vendors"?
If you have chosen a wedding location that has a list of "preferred" or "approved" vendors, it is important to confirm the services of those other vendors, when you are making your decision. Their service offering and prices must be considered when it comes to your budget. This option will also limit your ability to use your own vendors.

4. What is included with your fees and how much do the extras cost?
Having a clear understanding of what you are getting is very important. Also remember to confirm the cost of every change that you make, to prevent any surprises.

5. Can the location accommodate the type of music you will like?
Different spaces have different acoustic properties and some rooms just sound better than others period. Churches are generally constructed with good acoustic design as hearing a service is important. The space you choose should be appropriate for the types of music you have in mind. You will also want to confirm if you can use your own DJ or musicians, and what equipment will be available for use on the day of your wedding. You will also want to confirm if there is any additional cost for audio setup and take down.

Tips!
  • Select a ceremony and reception location that are within close proximity, and confirm your travel time between locations.
  • Confirm parking conditions and identify how accessible it is for your guest.
  • If you are from different cultures and you are having difficulty deciding what type of ceremony to have, consider having a neutral ceremony as a compromise.
  • When planning an outdoor wedding, plan for an alternative in case of inclement weather.
  • Visit the various sites at the time of day you intend to have your wedding; this will give you a sense of what the space will look like at the time of your wedding.
  • Remember to not only look at the ambiance of a venue, but also look at their menu options and arrange for a tasting.
  • When looking at potential wedding locations, take pictures so that you can remember what each one looks like and use the images as a guide as you continue your planning.
  • Confirm what staffing will be available for your wedding day.
  • Inquire about all permits you may need.

As last words of advise, I suggest staying on budget and to ask as many questions as possible to confirm what the fees will cover. I also suggest thinking outside the box and of locations that are non-traditional. There are beautiful gardens, museums and restaurants that can accommodate a wedding. If you are having an intimate wedding, consider having your wedding at home. Stay organized by keeping a binder with notes, business cards, pictures and other details that you collect.
